I have been working with wood for several years. In the past these cut-outs were always combined with other materials including some form of framing. Most recently, as shown in this brochure, the 'frame' has been subtracted leaving the cut-outs free-floating, away from the hanging wall. This gives the effect of bas-relief.
Each work comprises up to one-hundred and twenty individually crafted pieces, these are assembled and bolted together from the back of the work, with a supporting structure. This method enables the sharpest possible connection of colours, giving the viewer the most immediate visual experience of the work.
My choice of images by Michelangelo is based upon the profound admiration I have for his work and the pleasure that I take in reinterpreting these using contemporary materials.
